23 May The International Conference “The Role of Education in Promoting Global Peace and Tolerance in South East Europe” Ended
The second day of the two-day international Conference “The Role of Education in Promoting Global Peace and Tolerance in South East Europe” was continued on 22 May 2012 in the Ceremonial Hall of the UNSA Rectorate. On the second day of the conference attendants had the opportunity to hear presentation of seven speakers who were speaking about the following topics:
• “University Cooperation for Peace in the Middle East”, Prof. Dr Sophia Menache, University of Haifa, Israel,
• “Human Values and the Bologna process”, Prof. Dr Jure Zovko, University of Zadar, Croatia,
• “Thinking out of Box: Teaching at the University Level – Making Theory Tangible in the Social Sciences” Prof. Dr Munther S. Dajani, Dean, Al-Quds Bard Honors College, Al Quds University, Palestine,
• “Peace Studies, Multiculturalism and Conflict Resolution in Teacher Education: An Example of the United States” Prof. Dr Loucas Petronicolos, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, USA
• “The Role of Higher Education in Promoting Peace and Development in the Middle East – the Lebanon model”, Prof. Dr Youssef Gemajel University of Beirut, Republic of Lebanon,
• “The University and Interregional Cooperation,” Prof. Dr Artan Haxhi, Rector, “Luigj Gurakuqi” University of Shkodra and Erard Curcija, MA, Head of International Cooperation Office, University of Shkodra “Luigj Gurakuqi”, the Republic of Albania,
• “Exchanging the Curriculum to Build Religiously Balanced Society,” Prof. Dr Yusuf Al-Mahmoud Sidiqqui, University of Qatar, Qatar.
Upon the completion of presentations, Prof. Dr Esad Durakovic, fulltime professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo, presented a draft of the Conference conclusions, which will be sent to all participants for their approval.
Moderators of the two-day international Conference “The Role Of Education In Promoting Global Peace And Tolerance in South East Europe” were Lejla Hajdarpasic, MA and Prof. Dr Senada Dizdar from the Faculty of Philosophy, and Doz. Dr Lejla Turcilo from the Faculty of Political Sciences.
A message from Rector of the University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr Faruk Caklovica and Director of the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue (DICID), Prof. Dr Saleh Ibrahim Al-Naimi ended the conference saying that cooperation between these two institutions would be continued by organizing joint conferences entitled “Message of Peace” and which will be organized every year at the University of Sarajevo, or at some of university centers in the region.
Upon completion of Conference’s working part, Rector of the University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr Faruk Caklovica and Director of the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue (DICID) Prof. Dr Saleh Ibrahim Al-Naimi, visited together with the conference participants the Memorial to Children Murdered in besieged Sarajevo 1992 – 1995. On this occasion they laid flowers on the pedestal with the names of 521 murdered children in besieged Sarajevo during the 1992 – 1995 period.
The International Conference “The Role of Education in Promoting Global Peace and Tolerance in South East Europe” was organized by the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue (DICID) and the University of Sarajevo.
The conference was organized upon marking the 20th anniversary of the siege of the University of Sarajevo and gathered together eminent professors from 14 countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Israel, Jordan, Qatar, Lebanon, Macedonia, Palestine, United States, Slovenia, Serbia and Turkey).
